SIGCSE 2017 – CRA-W Career Mentoring Workshop
CRA-W will host two different Early Career Mentoring Workshops on March 8, 2017 in Seattle, WA co-located with SIGCSE 2017, in an effort to increase the percentage of women in computing who reach the top of their career tracks.
1E: Managing the Early Academic Career for Women Graduate Students Pursuing Faculty Positions in Undergraduate Computing Programs – Room 607
The goal of this workshop is to provide critical mentoring information and advice for women graduate students (in their final year) in Computer Science and Engineering who are interested in an academic career in an education track. Speakers for the event are experienced, senior faculty members with extensive practical knowledge and mentoring involvement. Topics include mentoring, research strategies, finding the right job, networking strategies, using the classroom as your research study, promotion and tenure strategies, and life balance in an academic research environment, with plenty of time for questions and discussion.
1F: Managing the Early Academic Career for Women Faculty in Undergraduate Computing Programs – Room 606
The goal of this workshop is to provide critical mentoring information and advice for early-career (i.e. assistant professor) women in Computer Science and Engineering who are interested in advancing their career. Topics include promotion to the next level, being an effective leader, managing down/up – students/chair/dean, mentoring, effective teaching and class management, leading initiatives and building programs, and academic negotiations, with plenty of time for questions and discussion.
You are eligible to attend an Early Career Mentoring Workshop program if you meet the following criteria:
- Identify as a woman
- A senior PhD student (within one year of completing their degree), a post-doc, or currently a faculty member (Assistant Professor or equivalent level) or interested in becoming a faculty member
- Attending or affiliated with an institution in the United States or its territories
