University at Buffalo Speaker Series Highlights Women in Computing


The University at Buffalo (UB) Department of Computer Science and Engineering is celebrating its 50th anniversary this academic year. It has chosen this occasion to honor successful women in computing with a year-long speaker series. The Distinguished Speaker Series highlights several CRA board members and includes:

  • Nancy Amato, Texas A& M: “Sampling-Based Motion Planning: From Intelligent CAD to Crowd Simulation to Protein Folding,” on November 10. Amato is a member of the CRA Board, CRA Education Committee and co-chair of CRA-Women.
  • Wendi Heinzelman, University of Rochester: “Reducing the Energy Footprint for Wireless and Mobile Communication Systems,” on February 2, 2017.
  • Ellen Zegura, Georgia Tech: “Computing for Social Good: Stories and Lessons from Eight Years of Student Projects,” on April 20, 2017. Zegura is a member of the CRA Board.
  • Barbara Ryder, Virginia Tech: “Effective Program Analysis for Real-World JavaScript Applications,” on May 4, 2017. Ryder is a member of the CRA Board and CRA Education Committee.
  • Cynthia Rudin, Duke University: “Sparse Logical Machine Learning Models,” on May 11, 2017.

The series will be capped by Mary Jane Irwin, Penn State, who will speak during the UB 50th anniversary celebration event on September 28–30, 2017. Irwin is a past member of the CRA Board, CRA Government Affairs Committee, and Emeritus Member of CRA-Women.

All of the talks are free and open to the public, and are held on Thursdays, 3:30–4:30pm, in the UB Student Union Theater.
