Have you ever wondered how long the <\/span>NSF Data Buddies Survey<\/span><\/a> (DBS) actually takes to complete? This is a question the Center for Evaluating the Research Pipeline (CERP) has been asked frequently from engaged departments, prospective volunteers, and researchers alike. As such, CERP recently conducted an analysis of the past year\u2019s DBS data (2024 survey year) to determine the length of time it took survey respondents to fully complete the survey on average. In this blog post, we present the results from this analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n

About the Data Buddies Survey<\/span><\/h3>\n

The NSF Data Buddies Survey is an annual national survey conducted by CERP. Each year, DBS reaches tens of thousands of students and professionals in the computing community, providing data on career pathways, educational experiences, and workforce development.<\/span><\/p>\n

Departments that participate not only contribute to a national data collection effort but also receive <\/span>customized reports<\/b> that benchmark their students\u2019 responses against national data\u2014at no cost. Data are gathered in two ways: directly from CERP\u2019s cohort list of past participants who opt in to be recontacted, and from participating academic departments that share the survey link with their students. In 2024, DBS collected more than 20,000 responses from undergraduate and graduate students, non-degree students, and alumni\/professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Methodology – How Long Does It Take to Complete the Data Buddies Survey?<\/span><\/h3>\n

We split the following analysis into three exploratory questions:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. How long does it take for all Data Buddies respondents to complete the Data Buddies Survey?<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Is there a significant difference between cohort and department respondents in how long it takes for each to complete the survey?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Are there any significant differences between the four different respondent types (undergraduate students, graduate students, non-degree students, and alumni\/professionals) in how long they each take to complete the survey?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    We answered these questions by creating histograms that grouped respondents based on how long it took them to complete the survey. We then filtered the data to compare and contrast between the subgroups we were looking to analyze.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Results<\/span><\/h3>\n

    R1 (All Respondents):<\/b> Looking first at all respondents, the analysis found that just over half (56%) completed the survey in 25 minutes or less, with 20 percent of respondents falling in the 20\u201325-minute range\u2014the documented estimated time of completion within the survey. The next most common duration ranges were 15\u201320 minutes (18%), 10\u201315 minutes (12%), and 30\u201340 minutes (11%).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    R2 (Cohort Respondents):<\/b> Respondents from the cohort distribution completed the survey more quickly than the average. As shown in the next graphic, 72 percent of cohort respondents completed the survey in less than 25 minutes. The most common duration range for cohort respondents was 10\u201315 minutes (28%), followed by 15\u201320 minutes (19%) and 5\u201310 minutes (14%). Department distribution respondents were similar to the average \u2014 53 percent completed in less than 25 minutes compared to 56 percent of all respondents.<\/span><\/p>\n

    R3 (Alumni\/Professionals):<\/b> Alumni\/Professional respondents completed the survey in less time than the average\u201481 percent finished in less than 25 minutes. Most commonly, 27 percent completed it in 10\u201315 minutes, 24 percent in 15\u201320 minutes, and 15 percent in 5\u201310 minutes. No significant differences were found among undergraduate, graduate, or non-degree respondents compared with the average; just over 50 percent of each group completed the survey in 25 minutes or less.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Looking to the Future<\/span><\/h3>\n

    Overall, this analysis found that a majority of DBS respondents completed the survey in the target timeframe (20\u201325 minutes) or less. Both cohort respondents and alumni\/professionals finished more quickly than the average. No other significant subgroup differences were identified.<\/span><\/p>\n

    In response to participant and department feedback, the CERP team has recently reduced the survey\u2019s estimated length to 10\u201315 minutes. This shorter format is expected to further improve response rates and strengthen the data available to departments in future customized reports.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The Data Buddies Survey collects data from two sources, CERP directly contacts participants on our cohort list which includes those who opt-in to be contacted from other CERP surveys. CERP also collects data directly from participating departments who are sent the survey link to distribute the survey to any students enrolled in their department. Overall, 20,827 survey responses were collected from these sources combined.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    For one part of the analysis, the data was filtered and compared between those from the cohort distribution and those from the department distribution to determine if there were any significant differences. The total sample size from the cohort list was 2,865 and the sample size from the department distribution was 17,962.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    In addition, the survey collects data from undergraduate, graduate and non-degree students along with alumni\/professionals across the computing community. The analysis conducted also compared survey duration across each of those subgroups to determine if there were any significant differences across each group. The sample size of each group is as follows, 13,578 undergraduate students, 4,754 graduate students, 2,449 alumni\/professionals and 46 non-degree students.<\/span><\/p>\n
