Director of the School of Information
Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking a strategic and visionary leader to serve as the Director of the School of Information (the iSchool), an academic unit within the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences at RIT.
The iSchool has a long-standing history of innovation and embracing new ideas, e.g., as offering the first Information Technology degree in the country. The iSchool offers more online degrees, more interdisciplinary degrees, and more degrees at RIT global campuses than any other unit in the university. In addition, the iSchool has served as an incubator for nationally acclaimed programs in Computing Security and Game Design and Development, now offered through other college units. The iSchool has also been home to recipients of the university’s top teaching award, top scholarship award, ACM Distinguished Members and Fellows, and worldwide professional society leaders.
We are seeking a proven leader with experience in information technology, artificial intelligence, data science, human-computer interaction, application development technologies, health informatics, or other related areas of computing and information sciences; a track record of funded research; a commitment to interdisciplinary and collaborative work; and demonstrated ability to manage an academic unit. Successful candidates will have a strong commitment to both undergraduate and graduate education, as well as the ability to provide leadership and support for faculty research, scholarship, and curriculum development.
We are seeking a strategic thinker with knowledge of the emerging technologies and trends in the iSchool’s research and curricular domains and the ability to develop a vision for the future of the iSchool’s programs. The next Director of the iSchool should demonstrate ability to provide leadership in diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as student success, all of which are high priorities for the college. In addition, the Director should have research experience and published scholarship in areas of relevance to the iSchool, as well as the ability to mentor faculty and provide leadership in the growth of research and scholarship. Effective administrative skills are essential for this role, including planning, budgeting, recruiting, assessment, and professional development, as well as a commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration in partnership with other departments across the university.
This administrative appointment is for four years (ten months plus part-time summer) and may be renewed. The anticipated start date is July 2023.
The Director of the iSchool reports to the Dean of the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences. The Director of the iSchool is an integral member of the College’s senior management team which includes the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship / PhD Program Director, Assistant Dean for Academic Services, Assistant Dean for Student Success, Director of Diversity Initiatives and Women in Computing, Department Chair of Software Engineering, Department Chair of Computer Science, Department Chair of Computing Security, Director of the School of Interactive Games & Media, Director of Technical Operations, and Director of Operations.
The direct reports to the iSchool’s Director include 29 faculty members (tenure and non-tenure track) and two administrative/support staff, who supervise other staff members. This faculty total includes 1 open tenure track faculty position which will be filled during the next academic year. The Director, in concert with the Assistant Dean for Student Success, oversees three professional academic advisors who work with students in the school’s programs.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
• Provide direct leadership and management to support a culture of collaboration, innovation, respect, and teamwork within the iSchool, the college, the university, industry, and the greater community.
• Increase and enrich faculty scholarship, scholarly impact, creative opportunities, productivity, and professional development.
• Lead short and long-term strategic planning for the school in conjunction with undergraduate and graduate program directors, staff, and College leadership.
• Ensure robust and collaborative relationships with the leadership of the College and its other units; with faculty, staff, and students of the iSchool, and with other RIT entities.
• Actively mentor and annually evaluate staff and faculty including establishing clearly defined annual guideposts for tenure-track faculty and advocate for staff development resources for the school.
• Focus on achieving student success, as well as creating a supportive and stimulating environment for all students, contributing to a community committed to student centeredness.
• Oversee fiscal management to advance the school’s academic mission and ensure ongoing operational health, including budgetary management of the school’s annual $5M operating budget and initiating and proposing capital equipment and space improvement requests.
• Spearhead school fundraising, development, outreach, recruitment, and marketing efforts.
• Serve on committees and perform other job-related duties and special projects to support RIT’s and the school’s mission.
• Act as an ambassador to other units within the University and the iSchool’s broader campus community, industry, and the public, including building relationships with industries that support the iSchool’s students and mission.
• Support RIT’s global campuses, to ensure their delivery of curriculum with the same standards and caliber as our local programs.
• Work with our partner programs across the university, ensuring that students have adequate access to necessary courses.
• Work with RIT Online to deliver high-quality, high-touchpoint coursework to our online students.
As a tenured faculty member, the Director would engage in scholarship, teaching, and service at a level reflective of the additional specific duties and responsibilities of serving in the role of Director of the iSchool, as enumerated above.

The School of Information (the iSchool) is one of six administrative units within the College of Computing and Information Sciences; the school creates and applies knowledge in the field of information science, to bring together people, information, and technology. The iSchool oversees academic and curricula development for both undergraduate, and graduate students, pursuing degrees in three undergraduate BS programs, four graduate programs, and an advanced certificate program – including programs in computing and information technologies, human-computer interaction, data science and analytics, and web and mobile computing. The iSchool provides leadership, administrative, financial, and logistical support to more than 700 undergraduate and graduate students with 29 faculty and 7 staff in Rochester, and also provides support of the school’s degrees at RIT’s global campuses in Croatia, Kosovo, and UAE. The school is among the university leaders in terms of grant generation and publications, and faculty include winners of university awards for teaching and research, as well as professional leaders, including ACM SIG chairs. The school is also home to several labs and research centers, especially in the areas of human-computer interaction, accessibility, and data analytics. Required Minimum Qualifications
• A PhD in a related discipline.
• Associate or Full Professor, or Equivalent Industry Rank.
• Research experience in artificial intelligence, data science, information technology, human-computer interaction, web or mobile application development, health informatics, or other areas of computing and information sciences.
• Strong commitment both to undergraduate and graduate education with a spirit of student centeredness and dedication, and to leading a faculty focused on high-quality instruction and student success.
• Demonstrated experience or ability to provide leadership for an academic unit, including strategic thinking, vision, and administrative skills.
• Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the College’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
