Companies are increasingly investing in computer science research to support their strategic goals. This workshop looked at AI, society, and the role of computing research and the value and relevance of having a PhD in industry. There was a keynote from Mark Hill, Microsoft (Azure) and U. Wisconsin (Emeritus), on “Driving Innovation in Academia and Industry.”
This workshop was held at the ACM Federated Computing Research Conference (FCRC) 2023 in Orlando, Florida.

| Magnolia 13 Mark D. Hill Abstract: You might think that the key to driving innovation in academia and industry is solving problems and refining solutions. While these are important, the most critical and valued talents are picking a problem and getting started toward understanding it. I will share on some tips on these talents from forty years of experience. Even with generative AI, I predict that humans will drive these steps.
