AAAI Spring 2023 Symposium “HRI in Academia and Industry: Bridging the Gap”

Consider submitting a paper to attend the “HRI in Academia and Industry: Bridging the Gap” Symposium in San Francisco, California on March 27-29, 2023. The goal of the symposium is to bring together HRI researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to find common ground, understand the different constraints at play, and figure out how to effectively work together. It is part of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence 2023 Spring Symposium Series.

The use of robots that operate in spaces where humans are present is growing at a dramatic rate. We are seeing more and more robots in our warehouses, on our streets, and even in our homes. All of these robots will interact with humans in some way. In order to be successful, their interactions with humans will have to be carefully designed. The field of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) has been growing at the intersection of robotics, AI, psychology, and a number of other fields, for over a decade. However, until quite recently, it has been a largely academic area, with university researchers proposing, implementing, and reporting on experiments at a limited scale. With the current increase of commercially-available robots, HRI is starting to make its way into the industry in a meaningful way.

Themes that will be highlighted include:

  • Constraints and Needs of HRI in Industry
  • Relevance and Innovation of Academic HRI
  • Interaction between Academic and Industrial HRI: Publications, Conferences, Tools/Technology Resources, and Experiments
  • HRI Education and Training: What does Academia and Industry Need?

Important Dates

  • January 17, 2023 — Contributed paper deadline
  • January 31, 2023 — Contributed paper notifications
  • February 21, 2023 — Camera ready papers due
  • March 27, 2023 – March 29, 2023 — Symposium

For more information including how to submit a paper by the 1/17 deadline, see the symposium website here.

Computer and Information Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (CSGrad4US Fellowship)

With layoffs and the uncertainty of hiring in the tech sector, the Computing Research Association (CRA) has a unique opportunity to take advantage of!

The National Science Foundation’s Computer and Information Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (CSGrad4US Fellowship) and the associated CRA CSGrad4US Mentoring Program help tech professionals make the switch from industry to research and graduate school. The mentoring program provides guidance, mentoring, and coaching through the PhD application and decision-making  process. After acceptance and enrollment into a PhD program in a Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) field, the 3-year CSGrad4US Fellowship provides a $34K stipend per year as well as provides tuition and fees directly to the institution where the fellow enrolls as they work towards a PhD in a CISE discipline department in the U.S.

*CSGrad4US Fellowship applicants must (i) be United States citizens, United States nationals, or permanent residents of the United States by the application deadline AND (ii) have graduated with a bachelor’s degree in a CISE discipline or otherwise demonstrated CISE core competency before June 30, 2021; (iii) have never enrolled in and have no pending application for a doctoral degree-granting program in a CISE discipline; (iv) not be currently enrolled in a degree-granting program;

For more information about what qualifies as a CISE discipline, see: https://lnkd.in/eR6T_NWM and https://lnkd.in/eDUpz4wW

For Fall 2024 PhD admissions, CSGrad4US Fellowship applications open in Early Summer 2023. Please complete this form to be notified when fellowship applications open: https://lnkd.in/e-43J8f4
