UR2PhD is building capacity in computer science to increase participation in research.

The Undergraduate Research to PhD program (“UR2PhD”, pronounced ‘you are to PhD’) aims to ensure that undergraduate students have access to high-quality research opportunities, positive mentorship experiences, and information about graduate study and research pathways.

For faculty mentors, it reduces time spent on basic training, enhances research team competence, and equips graduate students with mentoring skills.

Program Activities Your Students Can Get Involved In

Graduate Student Mentor Training Course
A virtual synchronous course for graduate students who are actively mentoring undergraduate researchers. Students learn how to provide effective mentorship in a research setting. Successful participants receive a $1,000 stipend.
Undergraduate Research Training Course
A virtual synchronous course for groups of 2-4 undergraduate students who are actively working on a research project with a mentor. This course is intended for first-time researchers who are beginning their research journey. Faculty mentors should expect to provide students with either course credit or pay for their participation in the course and their research project.

Successful participants may be eligible to earn REU and technical conference travel funding.
Computing Research Engagement and Awareness Workshops
Workshops open to all students about computing research, research careers, and research pathways.
Graduate School Application Workshops
Workshops open to all students that intend to provide guidance on applying to CISE PhD programs.

The research course integrated perfectly in our summer initiative in undergraduate research. Students could get a comprehensive introduction to literature review and apply the methodology on the topics they worked on. The program permitted us free time to focus on advancing the research.
