UR2PhD is building capacity in computer science to expand participation in research and advance the preparedness of the workforce.
The Undergraduate Research to PhD program (“UR2PhD”, pronounced ‘you are to PhD’) aims to ensure that undergraduate students have access to high-quality research opportunities, positive mentorship experiences, and information about graduate study and research pathways.
For graduate students, the program offers a chance to acquire essential mentoring skills, develop research projects, and establish a supportive network with peers across various universities.
Program Features for Graduate Students
Take our Graduate Student Mentorship Training Course, a virtual, synchronous course that prepares participants to provide effective mentorship. First-time participants who complete the course and meet course expectations will receive a $1,000 stipend.
Course eligibility is limited to graduate students who are actively mentoring undergraduates participating in research; priority will be given to mentors of participants in the research training course.

The program helped me strengthen the unique skill set of aligning research goals across different fields … There’s so much rigorous work being done in the humanities and social sciences that can help build human-centered technical systems, and this program helped me see that connection.
This was an incredibly enriching program that forced me to take a closer look at the way I approached mentoring. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who’s overseeing undergraduate/graduate students or really anyone that’s in or seeking a leadership role.
I had a great experience participating in the UR2PhD Graduate Mentor Training Course, and I would definitely recommend participation to others. The best part for me was working with the two talented undergraduate students on my project… Working with them kept me motivated to complete the study, and our resulting paper was accepted to an international conference… On the way home one of the undergraduate students talked about how much she enjoyed doing research, and her new-found goal for attaining a Ph.D. It means so much to me that I had a part in inspiring someone else to chase that dream.
The UR2PhD graduate student mentor training course was very valuable to me, and I learned a lot about how to work with mentees!
Being a mentor was an incredibly rewarding experience. The program not only allowed me to guide a group of talented female students through their first research project in computing, focusing on machine learning but also equipped me with valuable training which enhanced my mentoring skills. Each mentoring session was a chance to apply these best practices, share my passion for mentorship, and witness the remarkable development of these young researchers. It was truly inspiring to support their journey and play a role in a program that champions the presence of women in the tech field.
Being able to dedicate time to review and rethink mentoring through this program has been truly valuable. Mentoring is such a pivotal component of education and career development, and this experience has allowed me to deepen my understanding of effective mentoring approaches, including how to navigate challenging situations.
I really enjoyed the discussions with fellow mentors provide opportunities for peer learning and valuable exchanges of ideas.
I’ve always found joy in mentoring, and now I feel more confident and better equipped to support others in both immediate interactions and long-term developmental goals.
