CRA-W/CDC Distinguished Lecture Series is proud to support the upcoming INWIC by providing Raquel Hill and Carolyn Phillips as the Keynote speakers.
What is InWIC?
The Indiana Celebration of Women in Computing (InWIC) conference is an ACM Celebrations Event that provides a low cost, regionally-tailored, small conference for women in computing. This year’s conference will be held on September 30th to October 1st, 2016 in West Lafayette, IN, at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel.
The second call for participation is now open! Click on the “Submit a Proposal” link under the Call for Proposals menu for more details. The deadline for submissions is Friday, September 2, 2016. Notification of acceptance will be provided on September 9, 2016. Registration is also open. The discounted rates expire on August 31, so register early to get the best price.
What will happen at InWIC?
There will be talks on cutting-edge technical issues and on social issues relevant to undergraduate and graduate women in computing. Creative social opportunities are available to meet faculty members, students, and area industry leaders.
After registration, InWIC will begin on Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm with a mixer where students, faculty, industry professionals, and recruiters can meet informally. Your registration includes dinner on Friday, breakfast and lunch on Saturday, snacks, and materials for various activities. Hotel reservations are available at a reduced conference rate. Please use the link in the header to make arrangements with the hotel. The deadline for the discounted rate is September 16th, 2016. There will be a Career Fair on Saturday after lunch. Registered attendees will have an opportunity to submit their resumes in advance of the conference to allow select sponsors to review them and arrange interviews as early as Friday evening.
Who can attend InWIC?
The conference is open to people in industry and academic institutions from Indiana and surrounding states. The program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students in computing/technology disciplines. Past conference attendees incude women from large public state institutions (e.g., Purdue University, Indiana University, IUPUI, Ivy Tech), engineering schools (e.g., Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology), and small private schools (e.g., DePauw University, Hanover College). A past InWIC even included a group from St. Louis, MO.
Keynote Speakers
With support from CRA-W/CDC Distinguished Lecture Series, INWIC is proud to present the following Keynote speakers:

Dr. Raquel Hill is a tenured Associate Professor of Computer Science in the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University. She was raised in Dry Branch, Georgia, in Twiggs County, where the current population is approximately 10,000 with over 25 % of children living in poverty. She holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Harvard University. Dr. Hill spent the 2013-14 academic year at Harvard University, where she was a Visiting Scholar within the Center for Research on Computation and Society. In 2016, Dr. Hill was selected and featured in Indiana University’s Brilliant Minds series, http://research.indiana.edu/2016/04/raquel-hill/.
Over the years, Dr. Hill has designed and taught several classes in information and systems security including: Analytical Foundations of Security, Trusted Computing, Computer Networks and Data Protection. Her primary research interests span the areas of trust and security for computing environments and data privacy. Dr. Hill’s research has been funded by various agencies, including the National Science foundation. She has published numerous articles on various topics, including: quality of service in networking, security for electronic voting systems, encryption-based access control, reputation systems, trusted computing, smartphone security, and privacy in research datasets. Her inter-disciplinary work on the re-identification risks in behavioral science data was featured in Forbes Magazine,http://www.forbes.com/sites/adamtanner/2013/10/11/decoding-the-secrets-of-sex data/#289d80925f64. In addition to her academic interests, Dr. Hill is a budding entrepreneur, who leverages her research, teaching, and industry experience to provide substantive and practical insight to individuals and organizations seeking to secure their computing infrastructure and to protect their sensitive data resources. Dr. Hill has also dedicated a significant amount of her time to mentoring students from under-represented backgrounds. To facilitate her mentoring interests, she became an Adjunct Professor within the Department of Computer Science at Jackson State University, a Historically Black University. |

Carolyn Phillips is a Senior Data Scientist at Neurensic. She was previously at Argonne National Labs. Her research has focused on designing solutions to problems at the intersection of mathematics, physics, computer science, materials science, nanotechnology, and high performance computing.

Registration fees cover meals, snacks, program materials, and access to all program activities, including the career fair. Hotel reservations are available at a reduced conference rate. Please use the link in the header to make arrangements with the hotel. The deadline for the discounted rate is September 16th, 2016. For students with accepted proposals, a hotel credit will be provided to apply towards your accommodations.
Registration is required for attendees (students, faculty, staff, business professionals) who will be participating in program activities and payment is required at the time of registration. Registration will remain open until September 16th, 2016, or until the conference fills up. You can adjust or cancel your registration up to September 16th, 2016, by emailing us at inwic@purdue.edu with “InWIC 2016 registration” in the subject line. There are no refunds after August 31st, 2016.
