Research Presentation: Enabling Science Breakthroughs Using Computer Science
Understanding climate change, developing improved batteries, finding predicted particles, monitoring radioactivity in the aftermath of nuclear accidents, understanding genetic function, and saving endangered species are just a few of the areas where breakthroughs in computer science topics are enabling science breakthroughs. This talk will describe some of these science challenges and the role for computer science in helping to address these challenges. In a national laboratory environment, the focus is on team science and tackling challenges that require an integrated team of people from many disciplines. During my career at Lawrence Berkeley Lab, a US Department of Energy Laboratory, I have had the privilege of working on many science projects. In this talk I will describe some of the challenges we as computer scientists are helping to solve and some of the next challenges that need to be tackled.
Mentoring Topic: Becoming a Leader
It is often hard to see how to become a leader without taking on formal leadership roles, this discussion will provide tips on how to practice leadership in your everyday life. Learning to lead without a formal title provides you the tools to become a better leader when you do have the title.

Speaker: Deb Agarwal, Senior Scientist, Data Science and Technology, Department Head, Computational Research Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Bio: Deb Agarwal is the Data Science and Technology Department Head, Inria International Chair, and a Berkeley Institute for Data Science Senior Fellow. Dr. Agarwal’s research focuses on scientific tools which enable sharing of scientific experiments, advanced networking infrastructure to support sharing of scientific data, data analysis support infrastructure for eco-science, and cybersecurity infrastructure to secure collaborative environments. Some of the projects Dr. Agarwal is working on include: AmeriFlux data processing and management, advanced computational subsurface modeling data management, and infrastructure for carbon capture simulations. Dr. Agarwal co-leads the DALHIS associated team. Dr. Agarwal leads a team developing data server infrastructure to significantly enhance data browsing and analysis capabilities and enable eco-science synthesis at the watershed-scale to understand hydrologic and conservation questions and at the global-scale to understand carbon flux. Dr. Agarwal is an advocate for diversity in computing and is a member of the CRA-W Board working to increase the diversity in computing at all levels. Dr. Agarwal received her Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from University of California, Santa Barbara and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University.

Bio: Gail C. Murphy is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Associate Dean (Research & Graduate Studies) in the Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia. She is also a co-founder and Chief Scientist at Tasktop Technologies Incorporated. Her research interests are in improving the productivity of software developers and knowledge workers by giving them tools to identify, manage and coordinate the information that really matters for their work. Dr. Murphy is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an ACM Distinguished Scientist. She is serving as the general chair for SPLASH 2017 and has previously served as a program (co-)chair for ICSE and FSE. She is on the editorial boards for CACM and IEEE TSE.
