Former CRA Board Member Jim Kurose Ends Term as NSF CISE AD

Jim KuroseLast Friday, September 6 was the last day for former CRA Board Member Jim Kurose in his role as Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). CRA was thrilled was when Kurose was appointed to the position, and we appreciate his dedication and service to the community over the years.

Last week, he published a blog post reflecting on his nearly five years serving in this role, describing it as the “experience of a lifetime.”

From his post:

It’s been an absolutely amazing time, full of important challenges and opportunities that have been met by an absolutely amazing group science and policy colleagues – in NSF, across the US government, in the science disciplines, in industry, and both here in the US and internationally.  The Roman god Janus – the god of time, transitions and duality (a great gig, if you can get it!)  is often depicted as having two faces: looking to the past and taking stock, and looking to the future and pondering what lies ahead.  At this transition, I’ve also been looking in both directions.

The post looks back and shares some of the new programs launched during his term, partnerships and working beyond CISE. He also looks to the future by describing some of the complex challenges that lie ahead. In the closing of the post, Kurose encourages individuals to contribute to the community in various ways, such as serving as a rotator to NSF, serving on research evaluation panels or advisory groups, or volunteering for professional societies. He also shared his thoughts on his time at NSF in a CS in DC (Computing Researchers in Policy Roles) article in 2016: https://cra.org/crn/2016/01/cs-in-dc-jim-kurose-assistant-director-nsf-cise/.
