Auburn University
Computer Science and Software Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE), situated within the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions. We seek candidates at the Assistant Professor level, although outstanding candidates at a senior level will also be considered. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications. Responsibilities include research, graduate student supervision, graduate and undergraduate teaching, and service. A PhD degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field must be completed by the start of appointment. Prior experience as faculty or postdoctoral scholar or in industry is desirable. Applicants must have the potential to develop a vigorous externally funded research program and a commitment to teaching.

Area of emphasis in this search is Artificial Intelligence (AI). We particularly seek applications from candidates with expertise in foundational models, natural language processing, machine learning or computer vision, from candidates with dual expertise in AI+X where X is software engineering, cybersecurity, or any other core area of computer science, and candidates who have expertise and interest in applying AI to solve problems in other domains such as agriculture, education, engineering, environment, and healthcare. Selected candidates will be expected to develop research collaborations with faculty in other disciplines who are part of the AI@AU Initiative (https://eng.auburn.edu/ai-au/), leading to extramurally funded projects. CSSE has started enrolling students in a new MS in Artificial Intelligence Engineering program this fall. Selected candidates will be expected to teach core courses in this program, and to develop new undergraduate and graduate courses in AI.

CSSE is home to the Auburn University Center for AI and Cybersecurity Engineering, and is affiliated with the McCrary Institute for Cyber and Critical Infrastructure Security (https://mccrary.auburn.edu). The department currently has a diverse, collegial, and international tenure track, teaching, and research faculty of almost forty, who support a dynamic research enterprise and strong undergraduate and graduate programs (MS in CSSE, MS in Artificial Intelligence Engineering, MS in Cybersecurity Engineering, MS in Data Science & Engineering, and PhD in CSSE). Current student enrollment is 1200+ undergraduate and 200+ graduate (including 100+ PhD) students. Further information may be found on the department’s home page https://www.eng.auburn.edu/csse.

CSSE is the highest ranked computer science department in Alabama, ranked 15th among departments in the 10-state southeastern region, and ranked nationwide 40th among departments at public universities and among the top 12% of all departments according to the latest US News and World Report rankings. It was one of the first computer science departments in the country to offer an ABET accredited undergraduate degree in software engineering. Auburn University is one of the nation’s premier public land, sea, and space-grant institutions, consistently ranked among the top 50 public universities of the nation. As a comprehensive Carnegie R1 research university, Auburn maintains high levels of research activity as well as high standards for teaching excellence, offering Bachelor’s, Master’s, Educational Specialist, and Doctor’s degrees in agriculture and engineering, the professions, and the arts and sciences. The university is nationally recognized for its commitment to academic excellence, its positive work environment, its student engagement, and its beautiful campus.
