CRA Welcomes New Members to Its Board of Directors

The Computing Research Association (CRA) Board of Directors is a distinguished group of leaders from the computing research community, united in their common purpose to advance CRA’s mission of catalyzing computing research through collaboration with industry, academia, and government.

As we begin the new fiscal year, CRA is proud to welcome nine new members to its Board of Directors – each committed to furthering the impact of computing research. You can view the full list of Board Members at cra.org/about/board/members.

New Elected Board Members 

At the end of February, CRA announced the election of four new individuals to the Board of Directors. Their three-year terms of service begin today, July 1, 2024, and will run through June 30, 2027. 

David Bader, New Jersey Institute of Technology 

headshot of David BaderDavid Bader is a Distinguished Professor and a founder of the Department of Data Science in the Ying Wu College of Computing at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he also serves as the Director of the Institute for Data Science.

Bader is a Fellow of the IEEE, ACM, AAAS, and SIAM, and a recipient of the IEEE Sidney Fernbach Award in 2021. He was inducted into the Innovation Hall of Fame at the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering in 2022, the same institution from which he earned his PhD in electrical engineering.

Bruce Hendrickson, Lawrence Livermore National Lab

headshot of Bruce HendricksonBruce Hendrickson is the Principal Associate Director for Computing at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab. In this role, he leads an organization of around 1,400 computing professionals with responsibility for the full breadth of the Laboratory’s computational needs, including research, platforms, and services.

Hendrickson is a Fellow of SIAM and AAAS, and a winner of the SuperComputing Conference Test of Time Award and the George R. Cotter Award, among many honors received during his distinguished career. He earned his PhD in computer science from Cornell University.

Fatma Ozcan, Google 

headshot of Fatma OzcanFatma Ozcan is a Principal Software Engineer at Google, leading data analysis research in Systems Research@Google. Previously, she was a Distinguished Research Staff Member and a Senior Manager at IBM Almaden Research Center.

Among Ozcan’s many honors are the VLDB Women in Database Research Award (2022), the IBM Corporate Award for PureXML Database Technology (2008) and the IBM Extraordinary Technical Accomplishment Award (2010 & 2009). She is an ACM Distinguished Member and the Vice Chair of ACM SIGMOD. She earned her PhD in computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park. 

Ozcan continues to serve on the CRA-Industry Steering Committee, and becomes its Co-Chair today. 

Manuel Pérez-Quiñones, University of North Carolina at Charlotte 

headshot of Manuel Pérez-QuiñonesManuel Pérez-Quiñones is a Professor in the Department of Software and Information Systems in the College of Computing and Informatics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. 

Pérez-Quiñones has received a number of honors and awards over his distinguished career, including being named an ACM Distinguished Member for Outstanding Educational Contributions to Computing (2019), the CRA Nico A. Haberman Award (2018), and the Richard A. Tapia Achievement Award for Scientific Scholarship, Civic Science and Diversifying Computing (2017), among others. He earned a DSc in computer science from The George Washington University. 

Pérez-Quiñones has been involved with a number of CRA activities, recently including serving on the Organizing Committee for the CRA Leadership Academy (2023), the Search Committee for the CRA Executive Director (2022), and the BPCnet.org Steering Committee (2020-2023). 

New Programmatic Committee Representatives 

Also starting as CRA Board of Directors members today are three new programmatic committee representatives.

Nadya Bliss, Arizona State University 

headshot of Nadya BlissNadya Bliss joins the CRA Board of Directors as the representative of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC). A CCC Council member since 2017, she has actively contributed to numerous CCC initiatives, including serving on the Addressing the Unforeseen Deleterious Impacts of Technology (AUDIT) Task Force. Since 2022, she has served as the CCC Vice Chair, and today, she assumes the position of CCC Chair.

Bliss is the Executive Director of the Global Security Initiative and a Professor of the Practice in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence at Arizona State University. She is also a Senior Global Futures Scientist at the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory. 

Bliss was awarded the inaugural MIT Lincoln Laboratory Early Career Technical Achievement award in 2011, as well as the R&D 100 Award. She earned her PhD in applied mathematics for the life and social sciences (complex adaptive systems science) from Arizona State University.

Susan Rodger, Duke University 

headshot of Susan RodgerSusan Rodger joins the CRA Board of Directors as the representative of CRA’s Widening Participation Committee (CRA-WP). She has served as CRA-WP Co-Chair since 2022.

Rodger is a Professor of the Practice in the Computer Science Department at Duke University. 

She was the recipient of the 2019 IEEE Computer Society Taylor L. Booth Education Award and the 2013 ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award. She served on the ACM SIGCSE Board of Directors, including as it’s Chair from 2013-2016. She earned her PhD in computer science from Purdue University. 

Kelly Shaw, Williams College 

headshot of Kelly ShawKelly Shaw joins the CRA Board of Directors as the representative of CRA’s Education Committee (CRA-E). She has been a CRA-E Board of Directors member since 2020 and has served as CRA-E Co-Chair since 2022. She has served in leadership roles for a number of CRA programs, including the NSF CSGrad4US Graduate Fellowship and Mentoring Program, UR2PhD, the CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award, and the Career Landscape Workshop

Shaw is a Professor of Computer Science at Williams College and a Fellow of the ELATES Women in STEM Leadership program. 

She earned her PhD in computer science from Stanford University. 

New Society Liaison Representatives  

Also starting as CRA Board of Directors members today are two new society liaison representatives.

Will Enck, North Carolina State University 

headshot of Will EnckWill Enck joins the CRA Board of Directors as the USENIX representative. He is Co-Director of the Secure Computing Institute (SCI), Director of the Wolfpack Security and Privacy Research (WSPR) laboratory, and Professor in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University. 

Enck is serving as Department Editor for IEEE Security and Privacy Magazine and Associate Editor for ACM TOIT. 

He was honored with the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2013. He earned his PhD in computer science and engineering from Pennsylvania State University. 

Deborah Silver, Rutgers University 

headshot of Deborah SilverDeborah Silver joins the CRA Board of Directors as one of two IEEE-CS representatives. She is the Executive Director of the Professional Science Master’s Program at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. 

Silver is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Professional Science Master’s Association and has previously been the Vice President. She is also a member of the Board of Governors for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society and a member of the IEEE Visualization Steering Committee.

She was inducted into the IEEE Visualization Academy in 2020. She earned her PhD in computer science from Princeton University.
