Overview

During the Virtual Undergraduate Town Hall Event, you will join students from around the world in a virtual mentoring event where you will learn about cutting edge research in the field of computing. You will have the opportunity to ask distinguished computer scientists any questions you might have.

Research Presentation: Using Machine Learning for Network Capacity Management
Network capacity management is the process of managing network resources to ensure efficient use of the network. For large enterprises, the process requires a deep understanding of network traffic patterns within the network as well as traffic crossing to outside networks. This presentation will give an overview of how machine learning can help understand large network usage and use Google’s enterprise network as a use case of forecasting usage.
Mentor Presentation: Extracurricular Activities and Time Management
This discussion will cover how extracurricular activities can help with career development.  Taghrid will also cover tips for time management and prioritization to ensure success in studies while maintaining a broad interests profile.

Post-Discussion Chat: Join Taghrid Samak & Lori Pollock for a chat to continue the discussion about extracurricular activities and time management, meet fellow students, and share your experiences.

Join us November 9th at 5:00pm ET

Speakers

Speaker: Taghrid Samak

Dr. Taghrid Samak is a senior data analyst at Google. She applies statistical modeling for a diversity of network applications from capacity planning to wireless networks. Prior to Google, she worked as research scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where her research focused on applying data analysis and machine learning to enable cross-discipline scientific discovery, from modeling application behavior in large-scale systems, to enabling statistical analysis for genomics. She is co-founder and steering committee member of the Arab Women in Computing organization. Dr. Samak holds a doctorate degree in computer science from DePaul University in Chicago, where she worked as a teaching assistant, research assistant and then lecturer. She holds BSc and MSc in computer science from Alexandria University, Egypt and is currently pursuing her Juris Doctorate degree at University of San Francisco school of law. In her free time, Dr. Samak volunteers as a mentor for various women in computing organizations.

Host: Lori Pollock, Professor at the University of Delaware

Lori Pollock is a Professor in Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Delaware. She earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in CS at the University of Pittsburgh in 1986 and 1983, respectively, and her B.S. in CS and Economics at Allegheny College in 1981. Her research focuses on program analysis for building better software maintenance tools, software testing, energy-efficient software, and computer science education. She is an ACM Distinguished Scientist and was awarded the ACM SIGSOFT 2016 Influential Educator Award, University of Delaware’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the University of Delaware’s E. A. Trabant Award for Women’s Equity. She has actively worked on improving the participation of women and other underrepresented groups in computer science for many years. She serves on the Executive Board of the Computing Research Association’s Committee on Education and Committee on the Status of Women in Computing (CRA-W). She is also leading Partner4CS, a project towards meeting the CS10K goals in the Delaware region.
