White House Announces New Five-Year STEM Education Plan; Computing Featured Prominently

The Trump Administration announced today a new five-year plan for STEM Education. The strategic plan, named “Charting A Course for Success: America’s Strategy for STEM Education,” calls for building a strong foundation in STEM literacy in American students; increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM for historically underserved and underrepresented groups; and preparing students for the STEM workforce of the future. Strategic partnerships with industry and nongovernmental groups are planned to be a part of the initiative’s funding.

House STEM Education Caucus Briefing on Building a STEM Education Pipeline for Industry Needs

On Oct 20th 2015 the House STEM Education Caucus is sponsoring a briefing for Congressional staff titled, “Building a STEM Education Pipeline Aligned with Industry Needs: Perspectives from the Field.” The briefing is being moderated by the Council on Undergraduate Research and is partnering with CRA, ASME, and the ACM.

STEM Education Act Signed Into Law

On October 7th President Obama signed into law the STEM Education Act (Public Law No: 114-59; originally introduced as HR 1020). Among other things, the legisaltion expands the federal definition of STEM to specifically include computer science.
