CRA-W Distinguished Lecture Series is proud to support the upcoming BPViZ.
What is BPViZ?
The BPViZ workshop aims to be a catalyst for broadening participation of women, members of underrepresented groups and underrepresented disciplines in visualization, fostering a community of current and future scholars with interests in visualization through mentoring and encouraging participants to consider visualization as a career path. The workshop is designed to inform, inspire and encourage participants, specifically participants historically underrepresented at the conference, to engage in the multidisciplinary dynamics of visualization.
What will happen at BPViZ?
The goals of BPViz Conference are three-fold: (1) broaden participation of women, members of underrepresented group and underrepresented disciplines in visualization, (2) foster a community of current and future scholars with interests in visualization through mentoring and (3) encourage participants to consider visualization as a career path.
Speakers
Michael A. Smith
Intel
Michael A. Smith is a visual computing architect and Director of the Intel Software Academic Program for Visual Computing and the Internet of Things. He is a specialist in image and video analytics with a focus on automated media understanding for video search and visualization. He has given over 100 invited presentations and he is the author of numerous scientific publications and a book on video indexing, search and summarization. He is a pioneer in health systems for remote monitoring and he is a co-founder of the Urban Health initiative for improving patient wellness in underrepresented communities.
Kevin Griffin
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
He is one of the key developers for VisIt, a distributed, parallel visualization and graphical analysis tool for data defined on two- and three-dimensional meshes. Kevin is also a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Davis with research interests in Scientific Visualization and High Performance Computing. His current research involves visualizing smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation datasets on high performance computing platforms.
Logistics
Travel expenses (flight or mileage), meals and lodging costs will be provided for a limited number of workshop participants to support the participation of underrepresented undergraduate students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Minority Serving Institutions (MSI), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), Tribal Colleges, and 2-year institutions and community colleges.
Persons who would like to be considered for travel support should indicate so when applying. For consideration for travel support application materials must be received by 11:59 PM (EST) Friday, January 19, 2018.
To address interest from a larger community to participate, BPViz’18 Organizers are seeking sponsorship for potential workshop participants who are not eligible for funding described above. If you are a non-US Citizen and would like to be considered for travel and participant support to attend the workshop you are encouraged to apply. You should indicate your citizenship and indicate you are interested in travel support, based availability of funding, in your online application. There is no guarantee of sponsorship; however, if the sponsorship becomes available, and there are slots available you will be considered for travel support. For full consideration, all application materials must be received by 11:59 PM (EST) Friday, January 19, 2018.
Who Should Apply?
We encourage all persons with an interest in data visualization to attend the workshop and VIS Conference. All persons requests will be reviewed however, women and members of underrepresented groups (where underrepresentation includes by gender, from underrepresented disciplines, ethnicity or disability) are strongly encouraged to apply. All academic majors and interests in data visualization are encouraged to apply.
