Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) @ University of Delaware

With increased focus on intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar, there comes a rising need for large-scale energy storage. The vehicle to grid (V2G) project at the University of Delaware seeks to meet this need using electric vehicles, whose high power capacity and existing power electronics make them a promising energy storage solution. V2G technology allows a parked electric vehicle to charge its battery as well as discharge it battery back to the grid in response to real-time requests from a remote entity such as a grid system operator. This enables the vehicle owner to derive revenue from their electric vehicle.
This video describes a large-scale trial of V2G technology at the University of Delaware. Early results from this technology trial indicate that the nominal revenue from V2G is $150 per month per vehicle. Undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Delaware play a key role in developing and operating the V2G demonstration system.
