Over the last 30 years, we have learned a lot about how social technologies work and how to design them. However, significant gaps in our understanding remain—and many of those gaps are in areas that affect society in deep and meaningful ways. This workshop will bring together scholars from multiple disciplines to reflect on the field’s key findings and to create a roadmap for future research. The workshop will center the question: What are the key future challenges for research on social technologies, and what types of approaches do we need to address them? The workshop will use an unconference format, and it will present an opportunity to look beyond individual papers, conference sessions—and even whole conferences/journals—to reflect on the boundaries of the field’s knowledge.
