Expanding the Research Pipeline – An update on Scaling the Early Research Scholars Program

The Early Research Scholars Program (ERSP), founded by Christine Alvarado in the Computer Science Department at UC San Diego (UCSD), provides authentic research experiences to early undergraduates over one academic year. Since its inception in 2014, the program has transformed the landscape of undergraduate research at UC San Diego by significantly broadening access to research among early students, with over 350 student participants, 60% of whom identify as women or non-binary, and 22% as Black, Latinx, or Native American students. Further, ERSP has retained most participants (97% since the program matured).

CCC is Accepting Visioning Proposals from the Community

The CCC accepts proposals for visioning activities from the community to catalyze innovative research at the frontiers of computing. Successful activities will articulate new research visions, galvanize community interest in those visions, mobilize support for those visions from the computing research community, government leaders, and funding agencies, and encourage broader segments of society to participate in computing research and education.

NSF Partners with Ericsson, IBM, Intel, and Samsung to Support Semiconductor Design and Manufacturing

National Science Foundation recently announced a partnership with Ericsson, IBM, Intel, and Samsung to support the manufacturing and design of the next generation of semiconductors. The nearly $50 million partnership aims to invest in projects that encourage science and engineering researchers to apply a holistic, “co-design” approach to the way they develop semiconductors. Co-design approaches simultaneously consider the device/system performance, manufacturability, recyclability, and impact on the environment. Taking this design approach forces researchers to think of the whole lifecycle of a new technology, converging essential elements of the process into a single integrated process.

This program will hopefully alleviate the skyrocketing costs of cars and other chip-based products.

The National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource Task Force Releases Final Report

Recently, the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) Task Force released a roadmap to establish a national research infrastructure aimed to broaden access to resources for AI research and development. There are ever increasing opportunities to work with cutting-edge AI technologies, but many of the opportunities are limited to large companies, organizations and academic institutions with an abundance of resources. The implementation plan, Strengthening and Democratizing the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Innovation Ecosystem, aims to provide AI researchers and students with access to computational resources, high-quality data, training tools, and user support.

CRA Update: Keeping you in the know

The CRA Board election is on-going: academic candidates (8 openings) and non-academic candidates (1 opening). CRA has sent a ballot link to CRA members who are eligible to vote. Reminder: voting will close February 22nd at 11:59pm ET.

CRA hosts two key events every February: (1) the annual Leadership Summit (LS) of CEOs, presidents, executive directors, and other senior leadership to discuss issues of common concern for the computing research community and (2) the CRA February Board meeting.  The purpose of this CRA Update is to share the plans for these two meetings, and to offer you the opportunity to provide any thoughts/comments/questions on the Leadership Summit meeting agenda and/or the CRA Board meeting agenda (as requested at the CRA Conference in Snowbird last July).

The Education Committee of the Computing Research Association (CRA-E) is proud to announce three recipients of the 2023 CRA-E Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentoring Award: Nanette Veilleux from Simmons University, William Wang from University of California, Santa Barbara, and Yi-Chieh (Jessica) Wu from Harvey Mudd College.

These outstanding individuals are being recognized for providing exceptional mentorship, undergraduate research experiences, and, in parallel, guidance on admission and matriculation of their students to research-focused graduate programs in computing.

CRA Welcomes Two New CRA Board Members

CRA would like to welcome two new members to its Board of Directors: Alan Edelman (MIT) and Dezhen Song (Texas A&M University). Edelman is the new SIAM Representative on the CRA Board replacing Eric de Sturler (who’s term as the SIAM Representative ended in 2022). Song replaces Ayanna Howard who has ended her term early due to new service appointments in 2022 (e.g., the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee). CRA thanks both de Sturler and Howard for their service and contributions on the CRA Board.

Computing Research Association – Industry (CRA-I) held a roundtable in November organized by Jaime Teevan (Microsoft) and Ben Zorn (Microsoft) on Computing Research in Industry, which was based on the very successful and well attended session of the same name at the CRA Conference at Snowbird 2022. The roundtable was moderated by Fatma Özcan (Google) and the speakers were Lisa Amini (IBM Research Cambridge), Ben Carterette (Spotify), Jaime Teevan (Microsoft), and Manuela Veloso (J.P. Morgan Chase AI Research).
