Reflections from a CIFellows Alumna

During the economic downturn in 2009, Xiaojuan Ma was one of the many new PhDs in computing who considered delaying or abandoning a research career because of insufficient funding. From 2009- 12, the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) developed and administered the Computing Innovation Fellows (CIFellows) project, a short-term initiative that addressed this problem by providing funding for 127 postdoctoral positions throughout academia and industry.

First Video in CCC Computing Research in Action Series Released

In September 2012, the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) launched “Computing Research in Action,” a new video series in partnership with Patrick Sammon (Story Center Productions), Executive Producer of the Codebreaker film. The series is an expansion of our popular “Highlight of the Week” feature, in which we highlight each week exciting and important recent research results throughout the field. Through Computing Research in Action, the CCC plans to periodically develop two- to five-minute video segments on selected research to showcase on our website and YouTube channel. We are pleased to announce our first Computing Research in Action video, which showcases Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology being developed at the University of Delaware.

Computing Community Consortium: New Director Dr. Ann Drobnis

I am excited to take on my new role as Director of the Computing Community Consortium and lead the CCC as it emerges from startup mode into sustainability as the arm of CRA that works with the computing research community to create and enable visions for future computing research. I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the community as we embark on a new chapter for the CCC.

IT Research Hearing Focuses on Security, Education

On February 14, the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee’s Subcommittee on Research held a hearing on Applications for Information Technology Research and Development. CCC Chair and former CRA Board Chair Ed Lazowska, CRA-W Chair and current CRA Board Member Kathryn McKinley, representing Microsoft, and Kelly Gaither of the University of Texas at Austin testified on behalf of the computing community and articulated the importance of federal funding for computing research.

Computer Science Postdocs — Best Practices Guide

The Computing Research Association’s (CRA) Board of Directors has approved a Best Practices Guide, providing guidance to graduate students, postdocs, advisors and mentors, and departments and institutions on how to have a positive postdoctoral experience within computer science and engineering. We encourage our colleagues throughout the community to take a look at the document — the latest in a series of white papers about the recent increase in postdocs in the field — and adopt these Best Practices.

The Computing Community Consortium: A Force Multiplier for CRA

CCC has recently secured a new 4-year award from NSF, and is transitioning from “startup mode” to a sustainable organization through the creation of an Executive Committee and a leadership rotation strategy – ensuring that CCC will be able to continue to serve the computing research community for the foreseeable future. Find out about our events and how to get involved.

The Computing Community Consortium:

The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) has a standing RFP for activities with the potential to excite the computing research community, grow funding, and encourage broader segments of society to participate in computing research and education. This fall, the CCC funded visioning activities on Spatial Computing and Smarter Health.

2013 Leadership in Science Policy Institute Accepting Nominations

As part of its mission to develop a next generation of leaders in the computing research community, the CRA’s Computing Community Consortium (CCC) announces the second offering of the CCC Leadership in Science Policy Institute (LiSPI), intended to educate computing researchers on how science policy in the U.S. is formulated and how our government works. We are currently seeking nominations for participants.

CCC Launches New CIFellows Project Website

In early 2009, the Computing Community Consortium (CCC), with the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF), launched the Computing Innovation Fellows Project, a short-term initiative providing recent Ph.D.s with one- to two-year postdoctoral positions at academic institutions and industrial organizations with fundamental computing research and education programs. Three years later, we have developed a new website: https://cra.org/ccc/cifellows to establish a permanent record for the program.
