Biden Names Science Team; Eric Lander as Science Advisor; Elevates Position to Cabinet-level


President Joe Biden announced on January 15th his nomination of Dr. Eric Lander, biologist and former leader of the Human Genome Project, to lead the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and serve as the Presidential Science Advisor. Biden also announced that he was designating the Presidential Science Advisor a cabinet level position for the first time in history, illustrating the importance the new administration will place on the guidance of science in policymaking. Also nominated as Deputy Director of OSTP was Dr. Alondra Nelson, who is the president of the Social Science Research Council and a distinguished scholar of science, technology, social inequality and race.

Thoughts from White House Frontier’s Conference and the National AI R&D Strategic Plan


Last month, the President hosted the White House Frontiers Conference in Pittsburgh, an event that was co-hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University and attended by hundreds of scientific leaders in our community.

The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Chair and Director attended the event, which had many speakers from previous CCC events.

CRA Executive Director Speaks at White House Summit on Computer Science for All


On September 14, CRA executive director, Andrew Bernat was a speaker at the White House Summit on Computer Science for All. The audience heard from students and leaders of CS education efforts as part of the CS for All initiative. The initiative aims to ensure CS education is available to all K-12 students across the U.S. CRA member institutions’ support will include faculty expertise and effort, the development of innovative computing education products, and teacher development.
