First Video in CCC Computing Research in Action Series Released

In September 2012, the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) launched “Computing Research in Action,” a new video series in partnership with Patrick Sammon (Story Center Productions), Executive Producer of the Codebreaker film. The series is an expansion of our popular “Highlight of the Week” feature, in which we highlight each week exciting and important recent research results throughout the field. Through Computing Research in Action, the CCC plans to periodically develop two- to five-minute video segments on selected research to showcase on our website and YouTube channel. We are pleased to announce our first Computing Research in Action video, which showcases Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology being developed at the University of Delaware.

CRA Announces Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award Winners

The Computing Research Association honors the recipients of its 2013 Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Awards, which recognizes undergraduates in North American colleges and universities who show outstanding research potential in an area of computing research. This year’s awards are sponsored by Microsoft Research. Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs and Microsoft Research sponsor the awards in alternate years.

NSF Funding Opportunity: I-Corps Sites Program Proposals Due July 1

The National Science Foundation has developed a suite of funding opportunities, the Innovation Corps Programs (I-Corps), to help transition academic research outcomes into the marketplace.

One of these programs, the NSF Innovation Corps Sites Program (I-Corps Sites), expands our nation’s innovation ecosystem through fostering translation of academic research into the marketplace, catalyzing collaboration between academia and industry, and training students to understand innovation and entrepreneurship.

I-Corps Sites are funded for up to $100,000 per year for up to three years. The due date for responding to the I-Corps Sites funding opportunity is July 1st, 2013.

Investments in STEM Research and Education: Fueling American Innovation

On May 7, at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, DC, the Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) held its 19th annual exhibition and reception, “Investments in STEM Research and Education: Fueling American Innovation.”

CRA is a sponsor and was among the exhibitors showcasing research and education projects supported by the National Science Foundation. On behalf of CRA, John Melchi and Brett Bode from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign were on hand to talk about the “Blue Waters” project.

CRA-W/CDC Summer REU Programs Report More Experience With Publication Process

Undergraduate students who had participated in summer REUs were asked about the degree to which they obtained experience with the publication process while engaged in those REUs. Participants in CRA-W/CDC summer REU programs indicated that they had obtained significantly more experience with the publication process than students who had taken part in other summer REUs, p ≤ .05. Highlights of the CISE Fiscal Year 2014 Budget Request

On April 10th, the President delivered the Fiscal Year 2014 Budget Request to Congress. The Administration is requesting a total of nearly $7.6 billion dollars for NSF, which is an increase of $593 million, or almost 8.4 percent, over the FY 2012 NSF Enacted level. The Request also includes an increase of $85 million, or 9.8 percent, over the FY 2012 Enacted Level for the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) directorate, for a total of $950.25 million.

2012 Taulbee Survey

The CRA Taulbee Survey is conducted annually by the Computing Research Association to document trends in student enrollment, degree production, employment of graduates, and faculty salaries in academic units in the United States and Canada that grant the Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering or information. Most of these academic units are departments, but some are colleges or schools of information or computing. In this report, we will use the term “department” to refer to the unit offering the program. This article and the accompanying figures and tables present the results from the 42nd annual CRA Taulbee Survey.

2013 CRA-W Graduate Cohort Workshop

Boston offered up a sunny and brisk 52 degrees on April 4th as 338 participants, speakers, and staff began to arrive at the Seaport Hotel near the Boston Harbor. The hotel was the site of the 2013 CRA-W Graduate Cohort Workshop on April 5-6, 2013.This year’s Grad Cohort was the largest to date with 302 graduate students representing 118 institutions across the United States and Canada.

Expanding the Pipeline: Diversity Drives Innovation

Lack of diversity in computing is an enormous opportunity cost for technical innovation. For example, recent studies published by NCWIT show patents with diverse authors are cited more and companies with a more diverse sales force have more income. Diversity drives innovation. Even as demand for computing professionals grows, women and minorities are severely under-represented.
