CRA Surveys in Progress, Deadline January 22
The main part of the Taulbee Survey is still in progress. This includes data on student degrees and enrollment, faculty, research expenditures, and the every-three-years Profiles questions about department space, teaching load, and graduate student recruitment. CRA is conducting a one-time survey of doctoral institutions that goes beyond Taulbee’s basic enrollment numbers to collect information on the current surge in computer science enrollments. If you have any questions about either survey, contact Dr. Betsy Bizot, CRA Director of Statistics and Evaluation, bizot@cra.org or 202-266-2943.

BRAID/CRA Collaboration to Study and Evaluate Diversity Initiatives in Computing

CRA’s Center for Evaluating the Research Pipeline (CERP) will be working with Linda Sax, Professor of Education at UCLA, and a team of graduate students, on the research component of the Building Recruiting and Inclusion for Diversity (BRAID) initiative. The BRAID initiative was established in 2014 by Harvey Mudd College and the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology, and currently involves 15 computing departments across the U.S. that are committed to recruiting and retaining women as well as underrepresented men in computing majors. To that end, BRAID departments implement changes to their introductory computer science courses, and pathways into the major, as well as improve departmental climate, and promote outreach efforts for students.

CRA-E Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentoring Award

CRA is pleased to announce a new award program that honors faculty members in computing who have made a significant impact on students they have mentored. The CRA-E Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentoring Award recognizes faculty members who have provided exceptional mentorship and undergraduate research experiences, and, in parallel, guidance on admission and matriculation of these students to research-focused graduate programs in computing.

CRA Welcomes its Newest Staff Member

Jill Hallden is CRA’s part-time accounts payable specialist. She works closely with Sandra Corbett, program associate, to ensure that the organization’s bills get paid on time and reimbursements for participants in CRA-sponsored events are processed expeditiously. Prior to joining CRA, Jill retired from a 12-year career as an assistant professor of geography at George Mason University, where she focused on digital cartography and world regional geography. When she’s not processing reimbursements, she enjoys cycling, spending time with her three boys, and making interesting cupcake creations.
