Using CRA Data Buddies Survey data, this analysis presents changes in undergraduate students’ highest degree intentions over the course of a year. Students who participated in an REU during that year showed an interest in pursuing a higher-level academic degree than those who did not participate in an REU.
The annual Data Buddies Survey came to a close in February of 2021. CERP wishes to thank the 145 institutions and departments that made data collection possible, with special appreciation extended to Elite Data Buddies who received at least a 20% response rate from survey respondents.
The CRA Center for Evaluating the Research Pipeline (CERP) is excited to launch a new blog called the CERP Bulletin to share news, research and evaluation findings, promote resources and community platforms, and provide helpful context to CERP’s mission. CERP analyzed the results of the 2019 Data Buddies Survey and discovered disparities in experiences of students with disabilities at the undergraduate, terminal master’s, and doctoral levels.
CERP assessed whether undergraduate students who had aspirations to earn a graduate-level degree made steps toward reaching that goal in their senior year of college. Results are displayed by students who intend to earn a master’s degree and those who aspire for a doctoral degree.
CRA’s Data Buddies Project started as a pilot in 2011 and has been growing in its reach since then. As of 2020, 159 departments across the US and Canada are participating in the project. The 2020 Data Buddies Survey was launched on October 26th for the students in the DBS longitudinal sample and was distributed to the participating departments on November 3rd.

Among non-student professionals in computing-related jobs, women and non-binary gendered survey respondents report lower confidence in their ability to negotiate for resources in their job. There were no statistically significant differences in survey respondents’ confidence to speak up about issues in meetings or with their supervisor.
Analysis of how welcome students feel in computing by intersections of race/ethnicity and gender, and disability status and gender shows that there are significant differences between students from various demographic groups ranging from 36% (Black women) to 75% (White men) of students in each group.
In support of the NSF CISE initiative to Broaden Participation in Computing (BPC) and BPCnet.org, CERP has created a web app to facilitate access to statistics helpful to the CRA community. This web app can be used to quickly generate statistics for use in NSF proposals, particularly those that require BPC Plans.
