CRA-Education Launches New Website


The Education Committee of the Computing Research Association (CRA-E) has launched its website: http://www.cra.org/crae. CRA-E’s mission is to address society’s need for a continuous supply of talented and well-educated computing researchers by providing resources to inform, assist, and guide the computing community.

Christopher Johnson to Receive IEEE-CS Sidney Fernbach Award


Congratulations to CRA Board Member Christopher Johnson for being named the recipient of the 2013 IEEE Computer Society Sidney Fernbach Award for his work in scientific visualization and computing. Johnson is the founding director of the University of Utah’s Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute. Established in 1992 in memory of high-performance computing pioneer Sidney Fernbach, the Fernbach Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the application of high-performance computers using innovative approaches.

CRA Bids Farewell to Melissa Norr


After seven years as CRA’s Policy Analyst, Melissa Norr will be leaving CRA to begin a new career in library science. Melissa — who worked closely with Peter Harsha, CRA’s Director of Government Affairs, helping shape CRA’s policy mission — will be pursuing her passion for books with a position with the DC Public Library while she finishes a Masters in Library Science at Clarion University.

Announcing the 2014 Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship Program


Microsoft Research is inviting nominations for its 2014 Faculty Fellowship program, starting on August 28, 2013. This program recognizes and supports exceptional early-career faculty engaged in innovative computing research. Only one (1) application will be accepted per research institution. The potential Fellows for the Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship program must be nominated by their research institution, and their nominations must be confirmed by a letter from the head of the institution. Nominations and applications deadline: September 30, 2013

Announcements from CRA


Congratulations to Peter Lee, former CRA Board Chair, on his new position at Microsoft Research. Lee is now Corporate Vice President and head of Microsoft Research USA. CRA also congratulates Jeanette Wing, former CRA Board Member, on her new position as Vice President, Head of Microsoft Research International. The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) recognized Ed Lazowska and Lance Fortnow for their service to the CCC at its Council meeting in July.

CRA Announces Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award Winners


The Computing Research Association honors the recipients of its 2013 Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Awards, which recognizes undergraduates in North American colleges and universities who show outstanding research potential in an area of computing research. This year’s awards are sponsored by Microsoft Research. Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs and Microsoft Research sponsor the awards in alternate years.
