Biomedical Data Science Workshop at SHILAC 2015

On November 20-22, 2015, over 20 students from 4 different universities in Puerto Rico and 9 students from 6 different universities in the US gathered in San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Biomedical Data Science Workshop (BDSW). The workshop was sponsored by the CRA-W and the CDC through their Discipline Specific Workshops Program and designed to introduce students from underrepresented backgrounds to this new and upcoming field. The BDSW was co-located with the Symposium of Health Informatics in Latin America and the Caribbean (SHILAC 2015) which allowed the students to participate in its presentations, panels and hackathon, led by the MIT Hacking Medicine, prior to the beginning of the BDSW and on Sunday. Exposing students to an international, bilingual, scientific conference was for the purpose of creating more globally engaged scientists in the future. Eight mentors were invited by the BDSW to give presentations in their area of expertise as it pertained to Biomedical Data Science.
